A Walk in Nowhere - March 2022

On 20th March 2022 a group of invited friends and colleagues joined me on a walk that traced a route described by Willian Morris in his novel News From Nowhere between Hammersmith and the British Museum in Bloomsbury. In Nowhere, Morris's vision of a utopian future, capitalism and industrialisation have been swept away and its inhabitants enjoy a life of meaningful labour with time devoted to craft and pleasure. For this walk I had asked each of the participants to bring with them something that they had made themselves (I had made a pipe), had repaired or were re-using. As we walked we discussed the objects we had brought with us and the relevance of Morris's ideas today.
